Nurturing Parent Program
Fostering Healthy Dynamics Through Haircare Practices
The Nurturing Parenting Program with Emphasis on Haircare is designed to address the needs of Black and Brown families in Milwaukee County who are disproportionality represented in the child welfare system. By focusing on the cultural significance of haircare, this program aims to strengthen family bonds, mitigate biases, and enhance the overall parenting experience for families seeking reunification.
Program Objectives
Building awareness for your child
Parents/Caregivers will learn to analyze and consult on scalp health, recognizing signs of a healthy or unhealthy scalp. This knowledge will be shared in community setting, fostering reflection on the connections between haircare and overall parenting.
Nurture your child
Participants will learn techniques for safely detangling hair, creating positive bonding experiences. This program will facilitate discussions around challenges and barriers to parenting, providing a supportive community environment.
Caring for your child
Parents will engage in guided shampooing and conditioning processes, fostering an understanding of strengths and resilience in both the parent and child, especially in the context of trauma.
Build a long-lasting bond
A guided combing process will provide opportunities for parents/caregivers to reflect on their child’s individual needs and establish goals for confidence and well-being. This dialogue will create a framework for continued growth.
Classes for Foster Parents
The Nurturing Parenting Program haircare classes will highlight scalp health, safe detangling of hair, proper shampooing, conditioning, and styling.
